Exclusive Mr. [Sicx] Interview

Posted by dubonarrival on March 18, 2012
Posted in: Interview. Leave a Comment

I would like to introduce Mr. [Sicx] aka the grim reaper of bass. At only 21 Mr. [Sicx]’s sound and style have made him a force to be reckoned with. While rising to the top ranks of the EDM scene, Mr. [Sicx] still stays true to his fans and to the idea of making amazing tunes and not just crazy drops (he still drops it incredibly hard though). In celebration of Mr. [Sicx] reaching 20k followers on Twitter, he was kind enough to do an interview for us. With this being one of the best interviews we have seen, we are breaking it up into two parts. Part One being an exclusive look into the story that is Mr. [Sicx] and Part Two, an in depth look at Mr. [Sicx]’s production. Be sure to check in every day for some exclusive remixes, special 20k follower wallpaper and much much more! Enjoy!

Part One:
An exclusive look in the story of Mr. [Sicx]

Q. So what is your real name Mr. [Sicx]?

A. Austin Seltzer

Q. How old are you Austin?

A. I am 21 years old

Q. And where do you live?

A. I live in Dallas, Texas. More specifically a town called Sachse.

Q. Can you tell us a little about yourself?

A. Well, it depends on who you want to get to know. Austin Seltzer, is a 21 year old fun loving, outgoing, and social guy. He’s crazy passionate about music. I’m most at home when I’m hanging with friends, hitting the bars, throwing obnoxiously loud parties and checking out what’s happening in the music scene. Now, if you’re talking about Mr. [Sicx], that’s a whole other demon.

Q. Really, interesting. Tell me about this demon?

A. Have you ever wondered, ever thought, that there’s who you are, who people see you as, but there’s this whole other you. An aspect of who and what you are, but maybe nobody sees that other you, except you? Don’t answer that question. I know the answer. Everyone, yeah, everyone, has wondered in that way. There’s another truth that I’m tapped into. In spite of all of these arguably insane dichotomies in all of us, there’s one thing that unifies us all…the need to be a part of something, to belong.

Q. So is it safe to say that Mr. [Sicx] is the other you?

A. That is correct.

Q. So tell me about Mr. [Sicx]?

A. He’s my alter ego, the human incarnation of the grim reaper.

Q. Wow, sounds kinda scary?

A. Yeah, I can see that. The grim reaper is conventionally viewed as a scary dude. I get it. But have you ever thought, he’s just a just a guy doing his job? Tons of people out there are doing jobs, because that’s their lot in life, they’re just doing a job. Think about the poor guy who’s a tax collector. He has no personal agenda to screw people. He’s just a poor working stiff, punching the clock, doing what the man has told him to do. He’s not necessarily evil. Again, he’s doing a job.

Q. Let me get this straight. What is the relationship between Mr. [Sicx], this grim reaper guy, and the 20,000+ followers you’ve picked up on Twitter in the past few months?

A. When we pass to the next plane, when we leave this world, Mr. [Sicx] is a guide of sorts, there to guide people through their new reality, sort of a father figure like Dumbledore is to Harry Potter. So you see, what we’re talking about here is something broader in scope than just a new sound, though I’m all about that as well. This encompasses an evolving story, with powerful, emotional music and i think the 20,000 people following me can see that this community is going to be something very unique and worth being a part of.

Q. So, who is your audience?

A. My audience has no face, no age, and no gender, no real allegiance so to speak. These are people who love my music, but there are a lot of artists who can say that. What makes my family, my fans different, is that there is a real sense of community. A community of fans on the one hand, but also players in the story on the other hand. My approach to music, is to insist that the story I’m telling musically, evolves as my music progresses. I have an incredible artist Jenna Barton AKA CalamityChemist who I pass all of my creations to, and she is able to bring my ideas to life. The music and art combine to put the listener in a surreal world. The lines between artist and the fan in turn will be blurred.

A. What does that really mean, lines between artist and fan are blurred?

Q. Well, A frontier which I believe remains unchallenged in the electronic music scene, is to tap into universal realities. Those experiences and emotions which make us who we are. Right now, artists are to focused on making crazy “bass drops” and the nastiest sounds. What happened to making great music that moves someone physically and mentally? I think that my fans have sensed that in what I’m doing, and I feed off of that need to connect musically. Along with those beliefs I make it top priority to talk to all of my followers, I can’t stand artists who don’t have the decency to talk to fans.

There is one last thing I wanted to say on the subject of tapping into universal realities. If you’re familiar with the metal world, you’ll know that Slipknot for example has fans who are so emotionally connected to the music and the band, to both the sound and the idea of what they’re doing, that there’s just nothing else like it in rock fandom. That’s a fucking community. Corey Taylor, Slipknot’s lead singer, who’s work I happen to love and admire, is also the lead singer for the band Stone Sour. Stone Sour has great tunes, and they’re a really good band, but they just don’t evoke the same sort of us “us against all enemies” kind of vibe that comes from Slipknot. That’s what I’m talking about.

Invader Gir

Invader Gir is a killer trio of life long friends out of Stuttgart, Germany. These guys produce some crazy electro tunes with their own world domination spin! We got the guys to do a little interview for us leading up to the release of their huge EP Megadoomer dropping February 3rd! Be sure to check in throughout the week for some sneak peaks at Megadoomer! If you like what you hear be sure to go show these guys some love!

Real Name:
Alexander, Valentin, Daniel

Artist Name:
Invader GiR

Age:
19

Location:
Stuttgart/Germany

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
In the early beginning of the 1990s, there were some top secret experiments with 3 babies on the Mars, but something did went wrong and the whole Mars-mission crew disappeared. Nineteen years later 3 kids with a strong addiction to electronic music were found in a crater on Earth. The researchers of the government could not see any use in them and send them over to Germany when a few days later a mysterious association called “Invader GiR” was founded.

How did you come up with the name Invader GiR?
Well, when we were young we all watched the cartoon called “Invader Zim”. And he had a little freaky friend called “Gir”, the secret star of the cartoon. When we got older, we all noticed that “Gir” is a totally hyperactive and crazy bastard and things we laughed about years ago were twice funny now. Just listen to our music – it is also loud, full of energy and crazy. So we decided to get “Gir” in our bandname and so “Invader GiR” was born.

How long have you been producing?
We all started experementing with “FL-Studio” with 16, but we do seriously produce for 1,5 years now.

What is your set up?
We use “Ableton Live 8″ and “NI Massive” for producing. For our Live gigs we use a “Mac”, a “NI Traktor S4″ midicontroller and a midimapped “iPad” – we are all Midifighters!

What got you started producing and what are your influences?
At first we were producing trance with some progressive-house influences by “Deadmau5″. But we failed… Nobody wanted to listen to because it was shit. We sat down and thought about what we were doing and decided to make a little break. But a year later we discovered the huge electro and dubstep-scene in Stuttgart, we did not knew before. Stuttgart is the electro and dubstep metropole of Germany. We had so much famous acts here, like “Haezer”, “Cyberpunkers”, “Gtronic”, “Foreign Beggars”, “F.O.O.L”, “Trolley Snatcha” and so many more!
Talking to that artists and discovering this amazing and absolutely banging music, that was so much different as all the mainstream productions you hear EVERYWHERE, made us sit down again in front of our “DAW” and produce banging music.

Which tune are you most proud of?
We don´t prefer any tune of us, because we´re still learing so many things and daily improve our production skills, but if we had to decide, it would be the two tunes from our upcoming EP “Megadoomer”: “Fkn Ninja” and “Molotow Premium” ´cause people totally freak out when we play them at our live-acts.

If you were stranded on a desert island with an Ipod with only 5 songs, which ones would you pick?
It doesn´t matter. We would kill eauch other, fighting about who would be the first one, listening to them.

Which up and coming producer should we be looking out for?
Tough question… Everybody producing Electro is an upcoming artist. The scene doesn´t exist that long and it is growing as fast as hell… There is one guy which work we really admire and he´s called Raupe.
http://www.facebook.com/#!/iamraupe
When we heard his tracks, we instantly asked him, whether he want to do an official remix for our upcoming EP. So he did, and the result is just AWESOME. This guy will become big one day – definitely!

Can you describe what the production process is like for you?
When we start producing, one of us knees down in front of the computer and prays to the Electro God, meanwhile an other is shouting the top secret formula to summon him and the third one is just producing inspired by the Electro God himself.

How long does it take for you to make a track from start to finish?
It depends on the mood of the Electro God, but if he´s satisfied, we need 2-3 weeks.

If you could collab right now with anyone, who and why?
- Drivepilot: he´s just awesome
- F.O.OL.: because Rasmus Hermansen (the producer) is the son of the Electro God
- Haezer: his tracks are so fucking badass!!!

What is your dream gig?
It is the “Mega Electronic Fest” in Puerto Rico in front of several thousand people. The people down there are really into electro and dubstep and a few weeks ago we were allowed to air an exclusive mixtape live on “M.E.F. Radio”. Maybe the dream gig could already be possible this year!

What do you have in the making right now?
This month we will finish two official remixes. They will be awesome! Promise!

What can we expect from you in the coming few months?
Our first EP will be released in the beginning of February with two original tracks and 4 remixes. Then there will be gigs, tours, another EP, all the usual stuff other artists also do. Oh, and almost forgot it… world domination!

When you´re not dropping sick basslines or making crazy bangers, what do you like to do?
There are other things to do?

Do you have any advice for upcoming producers and DJ´s?
If you think, you´re good enough in what you´re doing, then keep doing!

Finally is there anything you want to tell your fans? Any shout outs, the floor is yours.
When we started our “Invader GiR” project we never expected to get so much attention nad gigs in only half a year. This is just possible because of our fans and we are grateful for every single one, because the music we do, we do it just for you!

Thanks so much you guys for the interview. Be sure to go like there page on Facebook and follow them on Soundcloud.

I love to hear two guys getting together with a passion for music and coming out with a killer sound. That is exactly what BassComa is, and at only 17 Justin and Clayton have created a force to be reckoned with. Dropping some massive remixes and mash-up and playing killer sets these guys are on their way to the top! We were lucky enough to get an interview from them and here it is. Be sure to check in throughout the week for all things BassComa, we have a ton of songs and some crazy mixes these guys have done.

Real Name- Justin Smith, Clayton Stevens

Artist Name- Bass Coma

Age- 17

Location- Columbia, MO

Can you tell us a little about yourselves?
We became good friends right before we began high school. We both had a really big interest in electronic music, Justin was pretty big on Dubstep and I was more into House. Eventually, we decided to put our combined knowledge of electronic music together to mix it and manipulate it by creating Bass Coma. We started enjoying all kinds of genres and sub-genres across the EDM spectrum and put basically every one of those into our first show. That took place at a venue here in Columbia called the Bridge where we played for around 50 people. We’ve been playing all over ever since.

How did you come up with the name Bass Coma?
Whenever we first got started I made a list of a ton of names which I wish I would have kept. We just kept checking them off until we found the coolest and most original name.

How long have you guys been producing?
We have been working on it only a few months now on and off.

What is your set up (hardware/software)?
We just recently got the Denon DN MC-6000 mixer we use that along with a kaoss pad and the M-audio trigger finger occasionally.

If you were stranded on a deserted island with only an Ipod with 5 songs on it, what would they be?
Everything to Me (Adventure Club Remix), Moar Ghosts N’ Stuff By Deadmau5, Intergalactic by the Beastie Boys, And Human After All by Daft Punk

What was the first electro song you heard that made you be like “hell yea I want to make music like this”?
Booming right at you by Junkie XL

Can you describe what the production process is like for you guys?
We haven’t had a whole lot of experience with production, so learning something new happens almost every time. I like starting off with figuring out what drums I’m going to use and see how it goes from there.

What is your dream gig?
Some kind of large music fest. Something like Wakarusa or Electric Forest would be our goal.

If you could collab right now with anyone, who and why?
It’s a tough choice between Figure and Bassnectar. They both have really cool unique styles we’d love to work with.

The first song I ever heard from you guys was John’s Blasting Off, I was instantly hooked. A lot of your songs are remixes and mashups, how do you choose which songs you’re going to mash and remix?
We choose something that everyone will know, but at the same time we keep things new and fresh and expose people to new kinds of music.

Your latest remix is called Eyes on the Rain, a remix to Eyes on Fire tune to remix? (They absolutely killed the remix by the way; everyone needs to check it out)
It’s a song that quite a few people know, but it has very strong lyrics and vibe. It needed a bit of a more organic feel to it so not only did you hear it, but you listened to it.

What can we expect to see from you in the coming few months?
We have lots of production coming and we are getting more and more shows

What do you guys do when you’re not making tracks?
Hang out, work on mixes for gigs, finding and sharing new tunes ect.

Do you have any advice for upcoming producers and DJ’s?
Work on one thing first. Try getting really good at production first or djing beforehand. If you learn how to blend sounds really well in a set, the rest will follow when it comes to production or vice versa. But you should never strain yourself to both things at once.

Finally is there anything you want to tell your fans? Any shout-outs, the floor is yours.
We both want to thank everyone who has gotten the word out and helped us get this far so fast. We both also want to thank Marlene who is Clayton’s mom. She’s helped through a lot of this and helped us get many of the shows we have played at. We wouldn’t have gotten this far without her and all of our awesome fans.

We want to thank BassComa so much for taking the time and doing an interview for us. Be sure to check these guys SoundCloud page for all their tunes, and go show them some love on Facebook.

For only being 16 Chris Murdock has been doing work in the Electronic scene. He has been featured on Dubstep 101 and Ibrostep.com. He is currently signed with SubCon Records out of California. This guy has got a killer style and is constantly coming out with fresh tracks every few weeks, which can be rare nowadays. He was kind enough to do a little interview for us and here it is!

First off thank you so much for speaking with us and taking the time out of your busy schedule to let the fans get to know more about you and your music.

Artist Name- Chris Murdock

Age- 16

Location- Fountain Valley, California

Can you tell us a little about yourself?

I make bassy yet melodic music. I love to skate and talk to people. Cats are fun but my mom is allergic to them.

How long have you been producing?

I’ve been producing for a little over a year.

What is your set up (hardware/software)?

I started on Fl Studio but moved up to Ableton just because of more control.

What got you started producing and what are your influences?

Originally I liked djing but I got tired of playing other peoples music so I was like “Ima make dubstep!” ahahaha. Originally Skrillex influenced me but I realized there are WAAAAYY more talented artists out there (not bagging on my boyy).

Which tune are you most proud of?

My most favorite tune I made was probably my Feel High remix. Around my town, that’s what I’m known for.

What is your most favorite song ever? Either from you or any artist.

My FAVORITE song is probably Six Pack by Black Flag.

Which up and coming producer should we be looking out for?

The next upcoming producer(s) I would say is(are) probably Tonks, Tomba and Statesthetic*.

Can you describe what the production process is like for you?

To me the production process is like making a sandwich. SO YUMMY yet so difficult      -__- ahahaha.

So I was on your SoundCloud page and you shouted out that you make all of your songs without Massive, is there some deep seeded grudge you have with it haha?

Okay so Massive… It’s not that I hate it cause I’ve tried it and it’s alright… but I mean fuck! ahahaha. Everyone uses the same damn presets (Yoi yoi yoi). I respect the people who change it up like my homie Statesthetic (guy’s a freakin genius). I just don’t like how it’s over used.

If you could collab right now with anyone, who and why?

If I could collab with anyone, I would collab with Dillon Francis, that guy does some funky stuff man!!

What is your dream gig?

My dream gig is either Shambhala or I Love Techno

You have a new EP coming out soon, can you tell us a little about that?

So my new EP is really cool, In a couple songs they are really melodic then they drop really really hard. I also did a VIP of my old song Hank Hill and I also am making a song about boobs… do to me promising everyone on my facebook. ahahahaha.

What else do you have in the making right now?

I also just entered a remix contest for the song called Pucker Up by DivKid which is pretty bomb!

What can we expect to see from you in the coming few months? Maybe a tour??

In the next coming months, HOPEFULLY I can get some freakin gigs XDD ahahaha. If I get shows , I’ll deff do a tour.

When you’re not making tunes what do you do?

When I’m not making tunes I eat ,sleep ,or skate. :D or hang out with my beautiful girlfriend ahahaha.

Which genre is your most favorite to make?

My favorite genre to make is tied between Dubstep, Ska and Hardcore Punk.

So you have been featured several times on the big Dubstep site Ibrostep.com, how did that come about?

So with the whole iBrostep.com dealio, I met everyone on here through Dubstep 101 and then I met Tim who worked with them and talked to him on twitter. Through that I kinda just started shooting him tunes and he would play em!

Do you have any advice for upcoming producers and DJ’s?

My advice to other producers/dj’s is play your stuff more then you play other peoples stuff, ask peoples opinions, take criticism , never give up and always work on something until you can’t think of anything to add.

Finally is there anything you want to tell your fans? Any shout-outs, the floor is yours.

I love everyone! Thanks to everyone who has supported me like my parents, iBrostep, Sub Con Records, Jose Hernandez, my street team and any other sexy muthas out there who have helped me get to where I’m at!
It was an honor to be interviewed :D D.

Chris Murdock

Thanks again so much for taking the time and chatting with us. Every one that works on D.O.A, viewers and fans, I know greatly appreciate it. Keep up the bass and we all can’t wait to see what you have in store for us in the coming months.
Be sure to go and show Chris Murdock some love!
